Root Canals

The dreaded root canal! Few dental procedures elicit as visceral a reaction as hearing that the tooth pain you’ve been dealing with is the result of an infection that needs a root canal. This is why you might be surprised to hear that root canals are actually painless procedures that often eliminate the intense pain of a tooth infection. At Tarpon River Dental, we are proud to offer root canal procedures in Fort Lauderdale!

What is a Root Canal?

A root canal is an endodontic procedure (those focused on the center of the tooth) in which an infected pulp is removed from a tooth. This treatment is necessary to prevent infections from spreading and to save a tooth from further damage.

Why are Root Canals Necessary?

A tooth has three primary layers – the enamel, dentin, and pulp. The pulp is a bundle of nerves and veins at the center of the tooth, responsible for providing moisture and nutrients to the rest of the tooth structure.

As acids and sugars breakaway at the enamel and dentin, they create a cavity through which bacteria seeps into the pulp, causing an infection. If the condition is not treated, not only does it cause extreme pain, but as it worsens, it could dry out and ultimately kill the tooth, leading to extraction.
