Deep Teeth Cleaning in Fort Lauderdale

A Healthier Smile Starts Below the Surface

Plaque and tartar buildup below the gumline can lead to serious oral health issues if left untreated. Deep teeth cleaning, also known as scaling and root planing, is a specialized dental procedure designed to remove bacteria, plaque, and tartar from the pockets between your teeth and gums, helping to prevent and manage gum disease (periodontitis).

This treatment is recommended for patients with signs of gingivitis or early-stage periodontitis, where routine cleanings may not be enough. By targeting deep-seated plaque, a deep cleaning helps restore gum health and prevent further damage to your teeth and supporting structures.

What Does the Procedure Involve?

Before performing a deep teeth cleaning, Dr. Petruk will conduct a thorough examination, which may include X-rays and a visual inspection of your mouth. Based on the condition of your gums, tartar buildup, and the depth of periodontal pockets, Dr. Petruk may recommend scaling and root planing as part of your treatment plan. In some cases, a local anesthetic may be used for comfort during the procedure.

Scaling:

Scaling is the process of removing plaque and tartar from the tooth surfaces and below the gumline. This is done using a specialized ultrasonic scaling tool that breaks down hardened deposits. In some cases, an antimicrobial irrigation treatment may also be applied to help eliminate harmful bacteria and promote gum health.

Root Planing:

Root planing involves smoothing the tooth roots to remove bacteria and infected tissue. This helps prevent bacteria from reattaching, encourages gum tissue healing, and reduces the likelihood of future plaque buildup.

In some cases, antibiotic treatments or antimicrobial rinses may be recommended to control infection and support the healing process. If deep pockets persist despite treatment, additional procedures, such as periodontal surgery, may be necessary to fully restore gum health.
